           Carambola or also known as star fruit, is the fruit of Averrhoa carambola. This fruit is a species of tree native to tropical Southeast Asia. A carambola that is barely ripe has a very juice like taste. If the carambola ripens, it acquires notes of pear, melon, and gooseberry, there is also a balanced flavor of sweet and sour. Many people consume the fruit raw or as a juice or candied in sugar syrup.  This edible fruit has distinctive ridges running down its side, which is one of the reasons carambola is called the star fruit. Carambola fruits contain oxalic acid and the neurotoxin carboxin. Consuming large quantities of the fruit, especially for people with some types of kidney disease, may result in serious health effects,

The Origins and Distributions of Carambola

            The original range of Averrhoa carambola is tropical Southeast Asia, in which carambola has been cultivated for centuries. The carambola fruit was introduced by Austronesians traders to the Indian subcontinent and Sri Lanka. Carambola remain common in those areas in East Asia and also throughout Oceania and the Pacific Islands. Carambola has been cultivated in countries like India, China, Taiwan, and the southern United States. Carambola is also grown in Central America, South America, and the U.S state of Hawaii, the Caribbean and some parts of Africa.




Description

    The carambola tree has a short trunk with many branches, the carambola trees can reach up to 9m or 30ft in height. Its leaves are 15 - 25 cm long, carambola leaves are medium green in color with 5 to 11 ovate leaflets. Before a carambola is formed it was in a shape of a flower, flowers are lilac in color, with some purple streaks, and are about 5mm in wide.

    The carambola fruits have a thin, yellow orange skin, waxy outer layer, it's inside has a yellow flesh with juice when ripe. The carambola fruit is about 5 to 12 cm in length and is shaped like an oval. The sides usually has five or six long ridges. When cut, the carambola fruit look like a star. The flesh of the carambola is translucent and light yellow to yellow in color, there is also a brown seed in the middle of the fruit, and are about 5 until 15mm in width.


Nutrition

A raw carambola fruit contain about 91% water, 7% carbohydrates, 1% protein, and it also has a negligible fat. A 100 gram reference amount of raw fruit supplies 128 kilojoules of food energy and a rich content of vitamin C.
