Carambola: A Unique Tropical Fruit

                 Carambola              Carambola or also known as star fruit, is the fruit of Averrhoa carambola. This fruit is a   species of tree native to tropical Southeast Asia. A carambola that is barely ripe has a very juice like taste. If the carambola ripens, it acquires notes of pear, melon, and gooseberry, there is also a balanced flavor of sweet and sour. Many people consume the fruit raw or as a juice or candied in sugar syrup.  This edible fruit has distinctive ridges running down its side, which is one of the reasons carambola is called the star fruit. Carambola fruits contain oxalic acid and the neurotoxin carboxin.
